There are a wide range of less common and custom physical connectors for JTAG. The JTAG 20 pin connector makes it easy to create a custom cable. Some of the not entirely uncommon cables are JTAG 14, ARM 10-pin 1.27mm pitch, ARM 20-pin 2.0mm pitch. Flying leads is also sometimes used, but for more sustained debugging against a target, a purpose built cable is going to be more robust.
